Mattress cleaning Calgary 101

In the hustle and bustle of cleaning furniture and carpets, it is very easy to forget the one thing that gives us a good night’s rest. This item is none other than the mattress. Mattresses take a lot of beating and deserve a good bout of cleaning from time to time. The problem is that mattresses do not come with simple removable covers that can be taken out and thrown into the washing machine. But there is no turning a blind eye to the horrors that live on top of the mattress. Mattresses can have stains, spills and if not cleaned properly can harbour a variety of dust mites and even bed bugs. Simply changing the bed sheets aren’t enough.

Vacuum the Mattress
Like everything else, vacuum your mattress whenever you flip it. Flipping your mattress once at the end of every season evens out the wear and tear and helps in prolonging the life of the mattress. Vacuuming will remove any dirt, solid particles from food or dead skin cells that had settled down comfortably on top of the mattress. It is a good idea to use a clean upholstery attachment while doing this as the vacuum sucks up all kinds of dust particles from different corners of the house and you wouldn’t want to risk depositing these on your bed.

Stain Removals
The only stain that is likely to occur on a mattress is those that are protein based and are some form of bodily fluids such as period stains, blood, vomit, urine, sweat. In keeping with the general tradition try to tackle the stain as soon as it occurs. Use cold water to blot the stains as heat from hot water tends to cause protein stains to set in. A mixture of salt, baking powder and water are generally used to handle fresh stains. A paste is formed using the picture and rubbed on the area. The paste can be rubbed off easily after half an hour. Other alternatives include mixing hydrogen peroxide with dish soap. You can also use enzyme cleaners to clean such stains and get rid of the obnoxious odour produced by vomit all at the same time. Whatever the technique you use to ensure that the mattress is perfectly dry before you spread bedsheets on it and use it. Any trapped moisture may lead to the growth of mould spores.

Deodorizing
This is an optional step and is meant for those who enjoy a nice clean smelling mattress. With all the sweat and other fluids, the mattress has to endure it can start developing a unique aroma that may neither be unpleasant nor of any harm but may be annoying none the less. If you cannot handle the smell, take a sieve and sift baking soda through it and onto the mattress. The baking soda should be allowed to stand for a couple of minutes and then vacuumed up. The baking soda is natural deodorizer and will nullify any smells coming from the mattress.
