Carpet Cleaning Fundamentals
Stains are a natural and integral part of any carpet’s life cycle. Avoiding getting stains is impossible but cleaning up the mess is your responsibility as a carpet owner. Just as young kids cannot be stopped from painting on the wall or peeing in the living room, a carpet cannot be kept from getting dirty. So if you own a carpet, it is a good idea to have certain products in your home as part of your carpet maintenance toolkit. Let us discuss some of these devices and products below.
A PORTABLE STEAM CLEANER
This is one of the most essential devices required for a thorough cleaning of the carpet. The first important distinction to keep in mind is that carpet steamers aren’t the same as vacuums. If you aren’t hiring a professional carpet cleaner and intend to get your hands dirty in the cleaning process you will first of all need to buy a steam cleaner. Spend some time on the internet and research a couple of steam cleaners. Look at the portability, water removal, soil removal, drying, etc. capabilities of the steam cleaner. You should try to look for something that while removing water will remove the maximum amount of soil grime and dirt from it.
A VACUUM
Irrespective of whether you own a carpet or not, every household should have a vacuum because this nifty little device brings cleanliness to your home in a matter of minutes. Vacuuming is a very effective way of keeping your carpets clean. It keeps away the dust and doesn’t take too long. It is a part of most preconditioning treatment and post-treatment methods for cleaning of carpets. In general, you should vacuum your carpets at least once a week. Go over the area of heavy traffic more than one and if possible daily. Once the dust and grime settle down to the padding of the carpet, it will be very difficult to remove it by simply vacuuming.
Always remember to empty or replace vacuum bags when they are nearly full. If you do not do this you may end up adding more dirt to the carpet while vacuuming than there was already on it.
WHITE VINEGAR
Already a prerequisite for the kitchen cupboard, there are very few stains and spills that the mighty white vinegar cannot tackle. It is a boon particularly when it comes to pet stains. The chemistry of vinegar is such that it makes it very unfriendly towards stains. Create a cleaning solution by mixing half parts water with half parts of white vinegar. As you can see white vinegar is an extremely useful item to have in the household as its properties make it an extremely good stain remover. White vinegar is beneficial not just for removing accidental pet stains but also for all other kinds of stains such as those caused by coffee, ink, etc. Pour the cleaning solution into a spray bottle and spray onto the carpet. Slowly blot the area with a soft brush. After the smell has subsided and the stain faded considerably, use a white towel to absorb the remaining vinegar in the carpet. Always start cleaning or applying the solution from the perimeter and then work your way slowly towards the centre of the carpet.
