The Guide To Cleaning Wooden Furniture
Cleaning a wooden furniture can be a befuddling task especially since different wooden articles come in varying degrees of finishes. A general three-step formula for keeping your wooden furnishings clean and tidy is given below along with details on how to work with them.
DUSTING
Don’t stop dusting the table or shelves. Thin layers of dirt accumulate as films over the years. So never stop dusting your wooden cabinets, bureaus or tables. Feather dusters dampened cloths and wool dusters are very effective to remove dust. If you don’t use a dampened cloth, the scattered dust will remain floating in the air and resettle in the same region.
CLEANING
A rule of the thumb is to avoid cleaning wooden furniture with water as much as possible. You may use water and some detergent to form a soapy solution to attend to sticky spots. Dip a cloth in this solution and gently clean the wooden surface with this solution. Make sure you wring the cloth out before applying it to the wood. Once you are done, rinse it and dry it with a soft clean cloth. This is done since most wooden finishes are done with oil-based products. The oil gives the shine to the furniture but also makes it vulnerable to smear and shows fingerprints.
BRINGING OUT THE SHINE
No matter how good the polish, over time the shine is bound to fade. Is there no way to restore your furniture to its former state of glory? Yes, there is. But it requires some understanding. Typically during the manufacturing process varnish is applied to protect the wooden surface. The purpose of applying wax or polish is to reduce the occurrence of scratches and give the product a shiny finish. To restore the shine you must learn how to use paste wax made exclusively for furniture. You may use liquid wax if you prefer as it is easier to apply but be warned that it leaves a thinner coating while paste wax if applied properly leaves a coating that will stay as long as two years. Wax should always be applied in light coats, allowed to dry and then buffed to a decent shine.
SOME HOUSEHOLD ITEMS THAT CAN BE USED TO CLEAN WOODEN FURNITURE
BEER: You can utilize the alcohol in the beer to your advantage by wiping your furniture with a soft cloth dabbed in beer. Then wipe it off with another dry cloth.
TREATING WAX STAINS ON WOOD
Sure the candlelight dinner must have been pretty romantic but the nasty wax stains on the table thereafter have just stopped it short of becoming a perfect memory. Take a blow dryer and put it to maximum and take it near the wax spot and blow till it starts melting. Remove the melted wax with a soft towel. Now clean the area where the wax had been with equal parts of white vinegar and water (an all-time handy combo to handle nearly all kinds of stains)
TO ABSORB ODOURS
Baking soda does a lovely job of absorbing odours. Use naphthalene balls inside drawers to prevent insects from entering and termites from eating at the wood.
