Cleaning Upholstery
Over time, dust accumulates over furniture and upholstery items facilitating the need for cleaning them at regular intervals. Furniture cleaning isn’t a science. There are some general guidelines that should be followed to ‘shallow’ clean or surface clean any furniture. In order to deep clean upholstery furniture such as sofas, leather chairs one needs to know the type of fabric and accordingly target it.
HOW TO CLEAN UPHOLSTERY?
VACUUM: Vacuum left to right and front to back. Although you may feel like you are doing unnecessary and redundant work, you will end up sucking out most of the dirt embedded in the fibres that you would have missed otherwise. This is important as the presence of microbes and other bacteria will be considerably reduced because of which the probability of dust allergies will be minimized. This is an important precondition in any cleaning regime. Vacuuming the target object makes it easier to proceed with deep cleansing as all the surface dust and dirt is removed. If you have pets, make sure that you are removing any stray pet hair completely.
CLEANING A FRESH SPILL: Whenever a fresh spill occurs time is of the essence. To stop the spill from leaking into the furniture padding you must attend to it immediately. Thus, immediately start blotting the stained area with a white cloth. This will stop the stain from spreading any feather.
OVERALL CLEANING: To clean the sofa completely from top to bottom, use soapy water and a microfiber cloth and gently wipe on the sofa. Be careful not to use too much water as you could end up saturating the material. Saturating it will not just cause it to take a really long time to dry but also harm the sofa padding in the long run.
DRYING: It is best to open out the windows and switch on the fans in the room to allow the fabric to dry up quickly.
WHAT UPHOLSTERY CLEANERS SHOULD BE USED?
The type of cleaner that should be used mainly depends on:
a) The type of fabric
b) The type of stain on the fabric.
Upholstery fabrics can vary widely from cotton, wool to rayon, nylon. Its only natural that they should have different methods of being cared for. Due to a variety of fabrics on the market, the industry follows a code based system describing the type of measure that is to be taken when a spill has occurred on a particular type of carpet. These tags are typically found hanging on the side of the furniture. The set of standard codes and their associated cleaning remedies is provided below for your reference.
W: Clean the upholstery fabric with a water-based detergent.
S: Clean the upholstery fabric with a water-free product, such as a dry cleaning solvent.
WS: You may clean the upholstery fabric with either a water-based cleaner or a water-free cleaner, depending on the type of stain. (This is the best type of upholstered furniture to purchase if you plan to remove your own stains.)
X: This upholstery fabric must be professionally cleaned. You should only vacuum and brush it – never use any type of upholstery cleaner on it yourself. Unless you are extremely rich, this is not the kind of furniture that you will be buying. But hey for those of who you are, you now know who to call whenever you need to get such an item cleaned.
