The Turner Valley Carpet Cleaning Guide
Be it a stain or a spot, no one likes a dirty carpet, especially when it is the third most expensive investment made by a homeowner. We all want clean carpets that will last longer, be colourfast and durable. Dirt and dust are the natural particles that will accumulate over time and plague your beautiful carpet. Fortunately, they are easily removed by using vacuums with powerful suction capabilities. For the harder and tougher stains that require deep cleaning of the carpet, there is always a steam cleaner. If all else fails, you know which professional service to call.
BE QUICK ON YOUR FEET
As soon as that stain appears to be armed to take it out. Letting a stain just sit on the carpet till it hardens to a point where you cannot remove it anymore is simply stupidity. Attend to that stain when it happens. Since there are many possible types of stain, we will quickly go over methods to tackle the more common types of stains. Kindly note that techniques will also vary from fibre to fibre. So do go over our fibre specific articles to avoid doing anything that will damage the beauty of your carpet.
Tobacco Stains
Did some smoker miss the ashtray and drop the cigarette butt onto your precious carpet? Did you have to smile at him telling him it was no problem while secretly wondering how you would get rid of the carpet stains? This, my friend, is the remedy for you.
Create a solution using white vinegar, 1 quart of water and a tablespoon of liquid detergent. Blot it with a clean cloth and rinse with water. The stain will lighten and after a couple of more rounds of cleaning it will be gone.
You can also try rubbing the end of the pile with a hard substance like the end of a knife or a steel ruler to remove the tobacco residue from the carpet.
Coffee Stains
Nothing like a hot cup of coffee in the morning to kick-start your day. And just a teeny tiny coffee stain to ruin your carpet! The more the clock ticks the harder it will be to get rid of the stain. So grab those paper towels and blot. Let them soak up as much of the coffee as they can. Don’t rub. Next, spray some lukewarm water onto the stain and dab on the stain with a sponge. Now to prepare the cleaning solution to dissolve a quarter of non-bleaching detergent in a litre of lukewarm water and ix the solution thoroughly. Apply the cleaning solution on the stain by applying it to a cloth. Allow the cloth to lie over the stain and gently massage the stain ridden area. Start from the outside and work your way towards the centre in a spiral fashion.
Gravy Stains
No! Don’t stop serving gravy! Just take care of the stain! Start by scraping off any excess dried up gravy from the fabric by using the hardened edge of a substance like a knife. Next form a solution using a liquid cleaning solution or dissolving some detergent in an equivalent amount of water. This is because a gravy stain is essentially a greasy stain and will be removed by using an enzyme-containing detergent that is oleophilic by nature. Apply the solution into the fabric and blot with a dry white cloth. Other approaches to the cleaning solution involve spraying the stain with ammonia or vinegar solution.
Ink Stains
Stains from ballpoint pens and gel pens are easily removed. Just use the blot, dry and repeat technique we have discussed above. Stains from permanent markers, CD writers require a little more effort.
Take a white cloth and dip it in a cleaning solvent. Spray the detergent solution onto the solution and then use this cloth to blot it. When most of the stain has come spray water on to it, to remove the excess detergent.
Another simple technique is to get alcohol from the market and apply it to the stain. The neutralizing property of alcohol will remove the pigment from the spilt ink and leave it clean.
