If you are interested in knowing more about the characteristics of this fibre that make it so unique, please check out our article on it. This post will focus only on how to tackle the stains on the carpet and their subsequent maintenance techniques.
Some general steps that any professional cleaner (always recommended to get the expert instead of trying to experiment by yourself) will provide to you consist of the following:
- Vacuuming
- Pile Lifting
- Stain Removal
- Area Touchup
- Corrective Cleansing
VACUUMING
The first step towards keeping any carpet spic and span is to vacuum it thoroughly. Not only will it remove the trapped dirt, dust and various other particulate matter, doing so will ensure a longer life for your carpet and a healthier environment for your family. Vacuuming two times a week will prevent the accumulation of dirt on the surface making it easier when you start deep cleaning the carpet.
PILE LIFTING
A cylindrical brush is used to lift and conditions the piles. The hot water extraction method further helps reactivate the hydrogen molecules and straighten out the piles. This action will usually also bring out the dirt that is embedded deep into the base of the piles.
STAIN REMOVAL
Types of Stains & Stain Treatments
A. Water soluble stains – First blot thoroughly with paper towels. Then apply a solution of 1/2 teaspoon (no more) of liquid dish-washing detergent to one quart of water, A spray bottle works well. Blot repeatedly with paper towels. Rinse well with water. Repeat this process until the stain is removed.
B. Water soluble stains with odour – Treat like an ordinary water-soluble stain, but treat with white vinegar before using dish-washing detergent. Water-soluble stains with heavy colour – Same as water-soluble stains but treat with household ammonia before using detergent,
C. Water-soluble stains with heavy colour – same as water-soluble stains, but treat with household ammonia before using detergent.
D. Grease – Blot as much as possible with white paper towels. Apply volatile solvents such as 1,1, 1 -trichloromethane to paper towels and repeat blotting. DO NOT APPLY SOLVENT DIRECTLY to carpet, Repeat until stain is removed. Use rubber gloves and provide adequate ventilation.
E. Waxes and Gum – Freeze stain with ice or commercially available product in an aerosol can. Shatter with a blunt object and vacuum immediately. Repeat until stain is removed.
F. Medical Stains – Commercial preparations are available, a 5% Sodium Sulphate solution (from a photography store) may also be used, for stains more than a few hours old, this solution should be heated,
G. Rust – Most rust stains can be removed with a 10% solution of Oxalic Acid, More stubborn rust stains will require professional cleaning as restricted chemicals may be necessary.
AREA TOUCH UP
This refers to a set of surface cleaning techniques designed to tackle some of the most common issues that plague any carpets such as pests and troublesome carpet nibbling creatures.
Powder Based Cleaning
The powder containing the pest control agents are massaged or injected into the carpet and then vacuumed again to remove the excess powder. This also helps reduce further soiling of the carpet and may be done either manually or mechanically as per the area to be cleaned.
CORRECTIVE CLEANSING
This encompasses a set of periodic techniques that are used to remove oil stains, greases, etc, (basically all those persistent stains that are not easily removed by daily cleaning techniques.
The first technique that tops this list is Steam Cleaning, which we will look into in detail in another article.
In detergent based cleaning, a shampoo or other detergent is released onto a brush from a machine while the liquid is worked into the carpet to pull out the stains and oil. The residues are then extracted using a technique similar to the one used in Hot Water Extraction. When this technique is mixed with hot water injection and used one after the other, flattened carpets are restored to prime form.
The third technique is powder based cleansing that has been talked about in the “Area Touch Up” section.
