CUT PILE
This is the first type of carpet in which loops have been strategically cut. The loops are all cut to the same height and allowed to tuft slightly. This gives the carpet an impression of softness while at the same time the ability to be heightened to thickened levels. It is also the most popular type of carpet accounting for more than half of the carpet purchases. A cut pile carpet is suited for virtually any area of the home and any type of de’cor. Although generally most cut pile carpets are made from natural fibres, it is not uncommon to find them to be composed of a combination of polyester and olefin. Often it is the ability of these blends to hold up under large amounts of foot traffic that make them ideally suited for carpeting both homes and offices.
FRIEZE
This is a type of cut pile in which the yarns are twisted and heat-set in position so as to hide footprints and vacuum marks. The presence of highly twisted strands of fibre in frieze carpets accounts for their unique appearances. Not just that, the twist level of a carpet greatly influences how much it can stand up to the abuses of daily living. Some basic things to keep in mind about frieze carpets are that they are usually more expensive than other styles of carpeting because of their ability to withstand abrasion. This, however, does not mean that all frieze carpets are of high quality. Frieze carpets hide dirt very easily and it also acts as a natural insulator. The high-quality finish of the carpet makes it very dense providing insulation and warmth. However, the frieze carpet can cause you to have a false sense of security as you may think that now that you have bought a carpet of good quality you don’t have to worry anymore. But let’s face it. Even the best of us, lower our defences some time or the other. Why should carpets be any different? Frieze carpets require some special care like other carpets. Although no fancy chemicals are needed it should not be vacuumed with a vacuum that has a hard rolling brush.
SAXONY
This is a kind of dense, cut pile made with the yarn tufts packed together closely to form a smooth surface. This is a more versatile type of carpet, generally used in less formal settings. It is what comes to mind first when people think of carpets. The traditional kind with fibres standing straight up and all cut to equal lengths. Saxony has a good ability to prevent matting and crushing. It is a good choice for areas that receive high traffic such as hallways.
